Pretoria Road shoot-out suspects travelled at least 200km/hour
The men who were arrested on Pretoria Road yesterday (Thursday
February 6) after a shoot-out with police were traveling at least 200km
per hour.
Eyewitness Kirsten Fick was driving down Pretoria Road when the suspects’ Range Rover overtook him.
He said the speeding vehicle made him look like he was “standing still”.
Fick said the suspect’s car veered to the far right of the road and overtook several other cars.
“They were driving on the gravel to the right of the road; they must have hit a ditch, and rolled about five times,” said Fick.
Fick managed to pin one of the men between his car and the suspects’ vehicle until police arrested the man.
The men were arrested opposite Benoni Pets and Exotics, at around 1.30pm, on Thursday (February 6).
The five men, suspected of robbing a house in Pretoria and shooting a man dead in the incident, were chased by police from Garsfontein.
Crystal Park SAPS media liaison officer Tryna Maritz is still trying to confirm whether the suspects shot a man dead.
The men were chased from Garsfontein, with the help of Lyttelton police.
The North Rand Flying Squad assisted in the chase.
When the vehicle entered the Crystal Park SAPS precinct the Crystal Park SAPS Vispol members and CPF joined in the chase and cordoned off roads.
Maritz said Crystal Park SAPS officer Capt Alie van den Berg cordoned off Pretoria Road close to where the men crashed.
She said the men lost control of the vehicle as CPF members approached in vehicles on Pretoria Road.
Crystal Park SAPS, the Bromberg metro police and a CPF member arrested the men shortly after the car rolled.
Two of the suspects were taken to the Tembisa Hospital under police guard, after police shot one of the men in the stomach.
The man who was shot is in a critical but stable condition in the Tembisa Hospital ICU.
Police recovered five cell phones, four laptops, a signal jammer, DVD machine, TV, handbag and house breaking implements from the vehicle.
One of the arrestees can be linked to five house robberies and another to three hijackings.
Garsfontein police will handle the investigation.
