Missing Children SA assists the South African Police Service in finding people and creating national awareness.The first 24 hours after a person goes missing, is the most crucial. Our organisation exists to be reactive and to create awareness when a case is reported. Approximately one thousand four hundred and sixty (1460) children go missing each year it is a real and present danger and as an organisation we feel it is necessary to ensure that the citizens of South Africa are aware of this threat to the safety of our children.

The backbone of the 2011 Global Study on Homicide, UNODC Homicide Statistics is a collection of statistical data on intentional homicide (unlawful death purposefully inflicted on a person by another person). The dataset covers 207 countries and territories and provides data on homicide levels, trends and contextual characteristics drawn from a variety of national and international sources relating to homicide.

The victims of crime survey is the first national survey of its kind in South Africa. A countrywide,
household-based survey, it examines crime from the point of view of the victim. While surveys of
crime victims cannot replace police statistics, they can provide a rich source of information which
will assist in the planning of crime prevention.

The present report deals with the reported national serious crime figures and ratios for the 2011/2012 year
financial year (that is the period 1 April 2010 - 31 March 2011). These are compared to the figures
recorded during the preceding financial years since 2003/2004. The provincial crime figures are also
analysed in more detail and some comments made on aspects influencing the crime situation. More
detailed crime figures and maps are provided on the SAPS website at www.saps.gov.za.
